FILIPINO AMERICAN LIBRARY PROMOTES DIVERSITY THROUGH CHILDREN’S READING PROGRAM
LOS ANGELES (March 2008) – Children of today are growing up in an increasingly diverse world. Filipino Americans, for example, is now the second largest Asian group in the United States. The Filipino American Library (FAL) will help promote the value of this diversity through the very first event of its Children's Reading Program, which will be held on Saturday, March 29 at 2:00-4:00pm at FAL (135 N. Park View St, Los Angeles). It will feature author Dan Manalang and his book Ambrosia, recommended for children ages 3-8. The FAL Children’s Reading Program promotes the value of diversity to children in Greater Los Angeles through the reading of Filipino children’s books. Admission is free and donations are accepted. Food and drinks will be provided. The program is coordinated by Celeste B. Diaz, the FAL Children’s Librarian, and funded by grants from Wal-Mart and Citigroup Foundation.
Ambrosia, a beautifully crafted story about an unpretentious Filipino coconut that teaches a cornucopia of ignorant fruits to look beyond their differences and together they learn the beauty in diversity. First-time author Dan Manalang’s inspiration came from growing up in the Los Angeles area. He created this story, in part to express the importance of courage and tolerance. Founded on October 13, 1985 by “Auntie Helen” Agcaoili Summers Brown, FAL is the first and largest Filipino library in the country with a collection of more than 6,000 titles. Its mission is to actively promote the history, culture, and professional achievements of Filipinos and Filipino Americans through the book collection, leadership development, and cultural programming, thereby contributing to the achievement of a culturally dynamic, multiethnic America.
