1) Time is critical- this bill is ALREADY in the works and will be voted on as early as Tuesday.

2) They've told us very clearly that the Action Alert is working- they've been inundated with calls and e-mails!

In fact, we've been so successful, we've updated our Action Alert to focus on the Senators who have served in the military. WE NO LONGER NEED TO CONTACT THE SENATE LEADERSHIP- they've gotten the message loud and clear.

I'm attaching an updated Action Alert that identifies our new Senate targets. We're still looking to bring 13 Republicans on board, so your calls to the Senate targets will be critical.

Whatever you've been doing, KEEP IT UP! We need as many calls/ faxes/ e-mails as possible to the Senate in the next two days!!! We can't stop now- your help over the next week WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUCCESS AND FAILURE. If there was any time we need you, IT'S NOW!

Thanks,
Ben]]>

PHILIPPINES SHOWCASES ITS CULTURE AT UC BERKELEY FESTIVAL

The Philippine Department of Tourism (PDOT) in San Francisco participated in the 2008 EDITH COLIVER FESTIVAL OF CULTURES, a frolicsome annual international spring festival organized at the International House (I-House) of University of California in Berkeley on April 12, 2008. The festival aims to celebrate the different cultures and history of the peoples in the world and also serves as a vehicle in enhancing intercultural respect and understanding among peoples, and fostering lifelong friendships and peace.

The Philippines regularly joins this annual event as it seizes the opportunity to showcase its rich natural and cultural assets among festival goers especially the youth and student guests. A colorful display of destination banners, flyers, posters and other literature materials had attracted the interest of guests to consider the Philippines as a vacation destination in their future visits. Tourism personnel were also busy responding to queries of people wanting to know more of the country’s tourist attractions and activities. Next to the Philippine booth is the food booth of Filipinos of I-House, the lone Filipino students association at the UC International House. Guests were able to indulge in toothsome Filipino delicacies including the popular halo-halo; a mixture of beans, coconut, shaved ice, milk, and ice cream, and ube; sweet purple yam.

Many international students and a variety of guests who attended the annual festival of cultures visited the Philippine booth. Some shared their exceptional experience during their visit to the Philippines and others showed interest in visiting the archipelago in the near future. Other countries had also the chance to showcase their respective cultures in their booths that also seek to promote and instill awareness among the festival goers on their cultures, arts and artifacts.

The event was filled with colors and excitement as different participants displayed their culture through traditional music and dance performances. Expositions of jewelry and handicrafts were also set up. Different art crafts and skills, such as face painting, cultural story-telling, jokers, and other entertainers were highly appreciated by the guests.

SAMPLE LETTER FOR E-MAILS OR FAXES: SENATE

Dear Senator,

I was pleased to hear that the Senate voted unanimously to bring S. 1315 forward for a floor debate. I am writing to you now to express my strong support for this bill and to urge you to vote for it.

This bill will not only provide a range of benefits that will improve the lives of ALL veterans, it also includes provisions that will restore U.S. veteran benefits to Filipino WWII veterans. I call on you to vote for S. 1315 in its current form and to oppose efforts to weaken its provisions.

President Roosevelt called over 200,000 Filipino soldiers into service in the United States Armed Forces of the Far East during World War II. These brave soldiers were drafted as U.S. nationals, while the Philippines was a Commonwealth of the United States and stood shoulder to shoulder with American soldiers through some of the most grueling points of the War, including the Bataan Death March. Their efforts were critical in achieving success in the Pacific theater and the overall war effort.

The Congress repaid them by stripping them of the veterans benefits befitting their service through the 1946 Rescission Act. For over 62 years, the U.S. government has turned a blind eye to the valor and service of these soldiers, but we now have an opportunity to right this wrong with S. 1315.

We recognize the need to make sure that we're looking after all our veterans. The Filipino American community knows firsthand what it means to wear the uniform. The legacy of these World War II soldiers remains in the high levels of participation in the U.S. military from the Filipino American community. The Philippines is the nation with the largest number of foreign born service members in the U.S. military.

To our mind, S. 1315 not only provides critical support for ALL veterans, but corrects a 62 year injustice to members of the "Greatest Generation." There is perhaps no better message to send our veterans coming home now that the United States is committed to meeting the needs of all our veterans no matter when they served and doing right by them.

There are only 18,000 Filipino WWII veterans left, and they continue to pass away with their dreams deferred, without recognition from the U.S. government for their service and sacrifice. I hope you will be able to support S. 1315. Our veterans deserve nothing less.

Sincerely,

NAME

Madonna Decena (a Filipina) - Britain http://www.filipinopeople.com/article/article_6/ http://www.filipinopeople.com/article/article_6/ Wed, 23 Apr 2008 22:26:06 -0500 DImage408 http://www.filipinopeople.com/article/article_6/ Madonna Decena (a Filipina) - Britain's Got Talent Contestant (WOW!!!)

Madonna Decena touches a lot of hearts. Read article, then click below to view video:

MANILA, Philippines — Filipina Madonna Decena, who made it to the semi-final round in the second episode of the UK reality competition, "Britain's Got Talent," is now an Internet sensation.

The video of her performance of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" has merited over 39,000 hits as of Monday, and a five-star rating (exceeding the four-star system) from YouTube viewers.

In the video, Decena's sob story—and singing—left the entire Manchester Theater in tears, including judge Amanda Holden and two stagehands who led the 33-year-old Filipina to the stage.

Holden, an acclaimed West End actress, explained on the program's Web site that she was "moved" by the Pinay's touching real-life drama. "She had to leave her two daughters in the Philippines to work [in the UK] and she hasn't seen them in a year (actually, six months)," Holden related. "Every penny she earns, she sends back home."

At first, Holden said, she tried to contain her emotion. "But when she started singing … I completely lost it, really badly. I knew she was singing for her babies."
Now dubbed Madonna of Manchester on the Web site, Decena received two standing ovations from the audience—one at her song's end, another after the judges' comments—and a wink from the initially blasé judge and show co-creator Simon Cowell, who was shown chewing on a pencil throughout the Pinay's performance.

Holden says in the online interview that Decena is "a possible finalist—she's great!" On the show, she was just as effusive, telling the Pinay: "You'll go a long way on this show and you'll have all the money in the world and you'll be able to put your children in a plane and you'll be together. Because you, lady, have got talent."
Inquirer Entertainment was alerted to Decena's story by reader Alma Borja. Blogger and TV host Daphne Oseña-Paez sent us a link. Clearly, this Madonna has touched quite a lot of hearts.]]>

In what may well be an unprecedented opening day sale for tickets to a Manny Pacquiao fight, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says over 7,000 tickets of the 11,500 available tickets at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel & Casino were sold last Saturday for Pacquiao’s WBC lightweight title fight against champion David Diaz on June 28.

In an interview on journalist Dennis Principe’s radio show "Sports Chat" over dzSR Sports Radio, Arum told the "Main Event" TV boxing show analyst "the box office people report the tremendous demand for tickets was the biggest first day sale for a Manny Pacquiao fight ever and they had to limit sales to eight tickets per customer."

Arum said the formal press conference to announce the fight would be held on Los Angeles on May 3. He said he "didn’t want to hold it earlier because I didn’t want Manny to go through the inconvenience of coming to the United States for the press conference, flying back to the Philippines and then coming back for training." Arum said Pacquiao would begin training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach shortly after the press conference.

Arum has lined up what he termed "an ambitious schedule" for Pacquiao and Diaz. He said that on Pacquiao’s day off he would be flying on a private jet to cities like San Diego, San Francisco, Phoenix, Chicago so he could "greet his fans in all those cities."

Arum said Pacquiao was "thrilled" that the schedule for the promotion was being worked around his training schedule "because his training is the most important thing and we clear everything first with his trainer, the very able Freddie Roach."

Looking at the Diaz fight, Arum said Pacquiao is "faster than Diaz and has a lot more skills" but stressed that Diaz is "a very unusual fighter. He is very rugged, he is very, very determined." Arum said Diaz has a chin "like iron and its impossible to win over him by knockout."

The astute promoter predicted that Diaz, whom he also handles, "will be in there fighting, he will be in there scrapping with Manny and unless Manny is in unbelievably great shape he won't be able to go twelve rounds." He said that is why Roach was "insisting on another two month training period so that Manny is ready."

Arum described Diaz as "one of those over-achieving fighters who will stay in to the bitter end" and more often than not pull off a victory. However, he conceded that Diaz is "not the hardest puncher in the world but he is a difficult opponent for anybody."

Pacquiao Joins World’s Super Athletes In Nike Ad http://www.filipinopeople.com/article/article_8/ http://www.filipinopeople.com/article/article_8/ Wed, 23 Apr 2008 22:47:04 -0500 MikeG209 http://www.filipinopeople.com/article/article_8/ By Cynthia De Castro Asianjournal.com
LOS ANGELES – Manny Pacquiao has scored another knockout! In his first international commercial and third NIKE TV ad entitled Sports Training, Pac-Man is shown with the world’s super athletes - Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, and Xiang Liu.
Manny’s longtime coach Freddie Roach said that Nike Sports selected 10 of the top athletes in the world to be a part of their sports training commercial, Pacquiao included. It was filmed in Roach’s Wild Card Gym in California.

Pacquiao is the first Filipino NIKE endorser. He is the first Asian boxer to win three world titles in three different weight divisions (WBC and Ring Magazine Super Featherweight Champion, Former world champion at IBF Super Bantamweight, and WBC Flyweight divisions).

Manny first started endorsing NIKE in 2006 . His first TV ad for the Fortune 500 sports giant was entitled Ang Mamatay nang Dahil sa ‘Yo, a thematic take-off from the last line of the Philippines’ national anthem.

The second TV ad which came out several months ago is entitled “Fast Forward” and shows Manny’s routine training. The third ad, which just came out for release in HongKong and the Philippines, is the multi-athlete TV ad featuring Manny side by side with five of the world’s great athletes such as basketball superstar Kobe Bryant and tennis great Maria Sharapova.

A few weeks ago, Pacquiao announced that another Nike commercial will be released soon, this time featuring Golf Star Tiger Woods, NBA Superstar Kobe Bryant and The Pacman in one explosive commercial.

When Manny first signed his Nike contract two years ago, people were wondering how much he got paid for his endorsement. A member of Team Pacman grinned then and simply said “definitely everybody happy.” For sure, no one can be happier than The Pacman. (AJ)

Bob Arum may not get his wish of having Manny Pacquiao in Los Angeles by May 3.

Arum, the lone promoter of Pacquiao’s June 28 fight with WBC lightweight champion David Diaz, said the other day he had planned a press conference to be graced by the two boxers on May 3 in Los Angeles.

But there seems to be some miscommunication or lack of it because Pacquiao, according to his personal secretary, is booked for a series of engagements here and abroad until the first week of May.

Bren Evangelio, Pacquiao’s secretary, yesterday said the reigning WBC super-featherweight champion is in his hometown in Gen. Santos City catching up on his studies at the Notre Dame College.

On Saturday, Pacquiao will be in Cebu to play the role of Lapu-Lapu in a re-enactment of the Battle of Cebu which took place on April 27, 1521 when Lapu-Lapu and the men of Mactan, armed with spears, faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese captain Ferdinand Magellan.

Then from April 30 to May 4, Pacquiao will be in China where he was invited to tour the sports venues and facilities to be used in the Beijing Olympics in August. It may be part of a plan to create some “Pacquiao awareness” in China.

Arum had said before that Pacquiao may fight in China.

The China trip, if it indeed pushes through, eliminates the possibility of Pacquiao being in Los Angeles for the press conference being planned by Arum.

Still, on May 9, Pacquiao will be special guest during the turnover rites for the new Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano who takes the place of Gen. Hermogenes Esperon.

Yano is a friend of Pacquiao’s, an adopted son of the Philippine Army. Just recently, Pacquiao visited Yano in his Camp Aguinaldo headquarters, and they played basketball with some friends.

“It’s a promise by Manny to Gen. Yano that he will be there during the turnover rites,” said Evangelio, who said that based on the present schedule, the earliest Pacquiao could get to LA is on the second week of May.

The fight is scheduled June 28, and this would leave Pacquiao six weeks to train at the Wild Card Gym in LA.

Pacquiao trained eight full weeks in LA for the Juan Manuel Marquez rematch last month, and the result was a close win over the former champion. Trainer Freddie Roach said Pacquiao should train as long, as hard for Diaz.

But Pacquiao said he’s in shape, running in the morning in Gen. Santos City. There are also plans for him to spend a few days in Cebu, and train before his fans there, before flying to LA.

Arum thought May 3 was a good date for the press conference, saying he, “didn’t want to hold it earlier because I didn’t want Manny to go through the inconvenience of coming to the United States for the press conference, flying back to the Philippines and then coming back for training.”

Arum has drawn up “an ambitious schedule” or promotion for Pacquiao and his opponent, one that would take them to cities like San Diego, San Francisco, Phoenix, Chicago on board a private plane.

Arum, meanwhile, said over 7,000 tickets to the coming fight, set at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and dubbed “Lethal Combination” were sold last Saturday, the first day of ticket sales.

The Events Center of Mandalay Bay holds 12,000 and with still over 60 days left another sell-out looms.
